The night shift often faces unique challenges that can go unnoticed during the busy daytime hours. At Madisonhealth, a dedicated group called the Night Council has spent the past year bridging the gap between night and day crews. This council has become a vital voice for night shift employees, ensuring their concerns are heard and their work environment improves. As we mark the one-year anniversary of the Night Council, it’s time to reflect on the progress made, the impact on staff, and the ongoing commitment to support those who keep Madisonhealth running through the night.

How the Night Council Brings Voices Together

The Night Council consists of volunteers from every department who work the night shift, along with several representatives from the day crew. This mix ensures that both perspectives are included when discussing workplace issues. The council meets every three months to gather feedback, raise concerns, and suggest improvements that specifically affect night staff.

This structure creates a direct line of communication between night employees and hospital leadership. It allows the night crew to share their experiences and ideas in a way that leads to real change. For example, the council has tackled practical issues like improving parking lot lighting to increase safety during late hours and enhancing access to the vendor fridge in the Paragon area, making it easier for night staff to get refreshments.

Monthly Rounding: Building Connections Beyond Meetings

Beyond quarterly meetings, the Night Council members conduct monthly rounding. During these visits, 4 to 5 council members walk through the hospital to check in with night shift employees. This face-to-face time allows council members to share updates, listen to concerns, and show appreciation for the hard work done overnight.

These rounds have become a highlight for many night staff. The council often brings small treats and fun items such as candy, chips and salsa, Madisonhealth merchandise, Rocket Pops, Cowtails, and glow sticks. These gestures may seem simple, but they help build morale and remind night workers that their efforts are valued.

Concrete Improvements from Night Council Feedback

The Night Council’s work has led to several tangible improvements that directly benefit night shift employees:

  • Enhanced Parking Lot Lighting

Night staff reported feeling unsafe walking to their cars in poorly lit areas. The council brought this concern forward, and new lighting was installed, making the parking lot brighter and safer.

  • Better Access to Vendor Fridge

Night employees found it difficult to access snacks and drinks during their shifts. The council worked with management to improve access to the vendor fridge in the Paragon area, ensuring night staff can easily grab refreshments.

  • Regular Communication Channels

The council established consistent updates and feedback loops between night and day crews, reducing misunderstandings and fostering teamwork.

These examples show how the Night Council listens closely to staff and takes action on issues that matter most to them.

Strengthening Team Unity Across Shifts

One of the Night Council’s biggest achievements is improving the connection between night and day crews. By including representatives from both shifts, the council creates a space where everyone’s voice counts. This collaboration helps break down barriers and builds a stronger, more unified team.

Night shift employees often work in isolation, which can lead to feelings of being overlooked. The council’s efforts to communicate regularly and celebrate night staff contributions help combat this. When employees feel heard and appreciated, their job satisfaction and engagement increase.

What’s Next for the Night Council

As the Night Council celebrates its first year, the focus remains on continuous improvement. The council plans to:

  • Expand monthly rounding to reach more night employees

  • Explore additional ways to improve night shift working conditions

  • Increase opportunities for professional development and recognition for night staff

  • Continue fostering open communication between all departments and shifts

The council welcomes new volunteers who want to make a difference and encourages all night shift employees to share their ideas and feedback.

The Night Council at Madisonhealth has proven that listening and acting on night shift concerns leads to a safer, more supportive workplace. This group has built bridges between shifts and created a culture where every team member feels valued. As the council moves forward, its commitment to unity and support will continue to strengthen the entire Madisonhealth community.
